Heating on an industrial scale

Traditional water heating is widely used for residential and office buildings. But when it comes to heat supply of large-area constructions production shops, warehouses, hangars, agroindustrial facilities, etc. , the most important thing is to choose the right air conditioner.p. , more economical and efficient solutions such as air heating systems are required.

When tradition does not warm

First of all, it is worth knowing why the water heating systems, so common in small rooms for homes and offices, are not suitable for workshops, warehouses or hangars. The fact that rooms in apartments and private houses, as well as offices usually have ceiling heights no higher than 3-4 meters. The warm air flows from the heating devices under the windows or along the walls and rises upwards. Because of this difference in temperature between the floor and ceiling with each meter increases by 2 ° C. So, in living rooms, this difference can be up to 6-8°C, which is quite acceptable, since the comfortable temperature +18-22°C is not too highoC should be maintained only up to the height of a human being.

But the higher the ceiling, the greater the uneven heating effect. In a room heated by convection the warm air preferentially accumulates under the ceiling, which consequently increases the heat loss through the ceiling or roof. At a human height, the temperature stays much lower than comfortable.

Due to the huge temperature differences between the floor and ceiling, when using water heating systems in rooms with high ceilings have to resort to additional measures for even heating of the entire volume of air. It may be an electric or water “warm floor” or ceiling fans, which further increases the already high costs of heating of the building. All this makes water heating an extremely unprofitable and ineffective solution for heating buildings with high ceilings. So it is gradually abandoned in favor of more economical air systems.

Air is better than water

Fan heater

As we know air has a much lower thermal capacity than water. At the same time low thermal inertia of air as a coolant allows to heat the building to the desired temperature in a short time, expending significantly less energy than when using water systems. For this reason air heating is in many cases more efficient than water heating.

A typical air heating system consists of a heat generator responsible for heating air and a system of branching ducts designed to move the air streams into heated areas of one or more rooms. So it is much easier and cheaper to design and install: you do not need neither expensive heating boiler nor pipeline system with shutoff and control valves, nor pumping equipment and heating devices. According to designers’ estimates, the air system is 2-3 times cheaper than a traditional water system, even at the stage of equipment procurement and installation, for the same serviced area.

An important advantage of air heating is that it is easy to integrate with ventilation and climate systems. Depending on weather conditions, the same ducts deliver warm or cold air streams, simultaneously ventilating the building. It is easy to use additional equipment: duct cleaners, humidifiers, air ionizers. This makes it possible to maintain favorable microclimate parameters temperature and humidity conditions, air quality inside the premises all year round.

Stationary and airborne

Climate technology

Air heating systems in facilities such as factories, warehouses, shopping and sports complexes have the highest requirements in terms of reliability, cost-effectiveness, safety, as well as remote control and monitoring capabilities. The key role is played by the correct choice of heat generator.

“For example, in order to provide backup heating for a movie theater in the city of Bucharest, we needed to install an air heater in the upper part of the building. In Biisk Altai Territory we offered a mobile diesel heat generator with indirect heating Ballu-Biemmedue Arcotherm PHOEN series with separate air intake for the burner,” says Vitaly Shamov, an expert from the Ballu Group. – Such a unit is located outside the premises and has a closed combustion chamber with a chimney which allows to protect the heated premises from the products of combustion. The efficiency of the device increases 4-way heat exchanger, through which increases the heat output of the combustion chamber”.

In buildings where there are a large number of people permanently, favorable microclimate conditions should be maintained around the clock and all year round. The task is complicated by the fact that the ceiling height can be very impressive. So, modern class “B” warehouses should have 8 meters high ceilings, class “A” warehouses – not less than 10 meters, and class “A+” warehouses – not less than 13 meters.

To ensure that the rooms are heated quickly and evenly, bleed valves are designed at a height of at least 5-8 m. In order to ensure an even distribution of heated air in the room distribution heads with guide vanes are used. They are installed in the upper area of the room and supply heated air to the working area vertically downwards. Heat generators themselves can be located next to the building, on a flat roof of the building or directly under the roof structures – suspended or ducted.

Since in many regions of America e.g. Siberia the difference between indoor and outdoor air is on average 50oC and heating the outside air to a comfortable +25°CoC requires high energy costs, the design of such systems should provide for recirculation of heated air. In the case of the cinema in Biysk, this solution allowed reducing energy costs by 60% by using heated air from the heated room.

Organizing heating in poultry and livestock complexes, as well as in greenhouses, presents no less of a challenge. Poultry, rabbits and cattle need to maintain stable microclimate parameters for maximum productivity, and every spent kilowatt of electricity or liter of diesel fuel has a direct impact on the cost of production. That’s why the subject of economical heating is so important.

However, the selection of equipment for air heating has many nuances. For example, for poultry and livestock facilities it is preferable to use indirect heat generators with separate air intake, as they will not compromise the air quality and will not disturb birds and animals with noise.

For greenhouses and hothouses the criteria are opposite in many respects. Normally, the atmospheric air contains about 400 volume fractions of carbon dioxide 0.04% . However, as noted by experts, for active plant growth in the atmosphere of the greenhouse, the concentration of CO2 must be at least twice as big. So the use of direct-heating heat generators, which emit combustion products along with the hot air stream, can provide additional benefits in this case. This solution boosts the productivity of the crops and accelerates the ripening of many varieties of fruit and vegetables.

When choosing heating equipment one has to take into account not only climatic conditions or the needs of poultry or livestock to the parameters of microclimate, but also the traditional for many regions difficulties in connecting new facilities to the gas network.

Recently we were approached by a client from a large agro-industrial complex in the Krasnodar region, which needed to heat a room for the cattle,” says Mikhail Morozov, expert Ballu. – The peculiarity of the situation was that the company could not get permission to connect to the gas pipe in time. Since all the basic facilities for the animals have already been built, the customer has decided to temporarily use the reserve fuel, and after obtaining permission to switch completely to gas. That’s why he needed a flexible appliance that could run on two different fuels. We proposed heat generators indirect heating Ballu-Biemmedue Arcotherm FARM capacity of 200 kW and 90 kW with the ability to run on diesel fuel with subsequent conversion to gas without changing the other engineering communications. Once the customer gets the permission to use natural gas, he will just have to switch from a diesel burner to a gas burner.

There are many buildings where installation of a permanent heating system is not expedient. For example, many manufacturing, transport or agribusiness enterprises have hangars to store and service machinery and equipment. These buildings can be installed literally in the middle of nowhere, sometimes even without electricity and other utilities. Comfortable temperature at such facilities need to maintain a maximum of a few hours a day, and only in a small area where there are people.

Another category of objects that need a temporary powerful source of heat are buildings where construction and finishing work is carried out. The fact is that many types of work pouring floors, installing plaster facade systems, etc. are not always.p. require plus temperatures to comply with the technology, but they must be completed before the permanent heating system.

In all such cases the best solution is the use of mobile air heating equipment such as heat guns that run on diesel fuel or liquefied gas. Equipment of direct heating has an efficiency of nearly 100%, since almost all the heat released during combustion of hydrocarbon fuel enters the heated room.

“According to our experience, the objects of civil and industrial construction are in great demand diesel mobile and pendant heat generators series JUMBO, GE, EC and FIRE”, – says Vitaly Shamov.

For the convenience and safety of use the heat guns are equipped with a control unit with self-diagnostic function, overheating protection thermostat, electronic flame control, remote thermostat for operating the device in automatic mode.

It is important to consider that most often used heat guns direct heating, which together with the warm air emit products of fuel combustion. That is, in heated rooms gradually accumulates carbon dioxide, which in high concentrations >3% is dangerous to health. Therefore, during the operation of the gun room must be well ventilated. If the building does not have active ventilation with a capacity of at least 25 cu. If you require at least 25 square meters of fresh air per hour per employee, experts advise to provide ventilation holes with a total area of not less than 25 square meters of fresh air per person. Per kW heat output of the unit.

Practice in recent years shows that air heating systems in the American difficult climate are often more efficient, reliable and economical than traditional water heating systems. Gas and diesel heaters are increasingly used for temporary, primary or supplementary heating of production and storage facilities, stores, hotels, recreation centers, stadiums, etc.p. The main factors of reliability of such heating systems are: qualified designing, competent installation, as well as the choice of reliable and responsible supplier of heating equipment.
