Fujifilm launches new mirrorless camera GFX 100

Fujifilm has introduced the GFX 100 medium format mirrorless camera, which offers the highest resolution in its class, fast and accurate phase detection autofocus, in-camera IBIS stabilization and 4K video recording. Praised by professional and amateur photographers alike, the new camera is the flagship model of Fujifilm’s GFX mirrorless digital camera system.

New Sensor

The GFX100 has a sensor size of 55mm and a resolution of approximately 102 million effective pixels. Combined with FUJIFILM’s fourth-generation X-Processor 4 and FUJINON GF lenses, images have the high quality, sharpness and unique color reproduction characteristic of FUJIFILM.

For fast and accurate autofocus, regardless of the position of the subject in the frame, the sensor features 3.76 million phase detection pixels approx. 100% coverage . Setting a whole new standard for fast paced shooting with a large format sensor.

The backlight technology used allows the sensor to receive more light, resulting in less noise. Despite the large number of pixels the sensor has low noise, high dynamic range and high speed signal readout.

Image Stabilization

The higher the number of pixels, the greater the likelihood of micro-smear, which has a negative effect on image quality. To avoid this, the new sensor has been designed with IBIS, which stabilizes the image at up to 5.5 stops.

The integrated IBIS mechanism stabilizes the image not only horizontally and vertically tilt up/down and right/left but also during horizontal shifts and vertical rotations.

The shutter mechanism is suspended in the camera with four springs to reduce the effects of vibration. The GFX100’s handheld stabilization system greatly expands the range of handheld shooting and shooting scenarios, even for a camera with such high resolution.

Autofocus

The GFX100 is the first model in the GFX system to use the phase detection AF algorithm of Fujifilm’s fourth generation of X series cameras X-T3 and X-T30 , which is renowned for its precision and speed. The algorithm takes full advantage of the 3.76 million phase detection pixels spread across the sensor to set a new standard for speed and accuracy in wide-format cameras, performing standard “single point” autofocus as well as “zone” and “wide tracking. AF. The effect is especially noticeable when using simple lenses with a heavy set of focusing lenses, resulting in a speed increase of up to 210% over the conventional contrast AF system.

At the same time, the GFX100 boasts a dramatic improvement in autofocus accuracy with face and eye recognition, which has become an important feature for fashion and portrait photographers. Face detection now works at greater shooting distances and shows significant improvement in tracking a person’s lateral profile or when a person moves haphazardly in the frame, while maintaining focus on the subject that is walking behind the obstacle.

Video recording capabilities

The combination of the new high-speed image sensor and the high-performance fourth-generation “X-Processor 4” engine has given the camera the ability to record 4K/30P 10-bit 4:2:0 video 10-bit 4:2:2 with external recorder , the first-ever wide format consumer mirrorless digital camera with a sensor larger than 35mm.

When selecting the standard aspect ratio for digital cinema 17:9 , the GFX100 records video using a sensor area measuring 43.8mm W x 23.19mm H and 49.56mm diagonally. As a result, the image capture area is larger than on most professional movie cameras. As a result, the GFX100 is able to record video with shallow depth of field, wide tonal gradients and high sensitivity. The GFX100 records video with texture and detail, adding both dimension and atmosphere to your images.

While recording video, the GFX100 uses oversampling at 50.5 megapixels. Camera supports H codec.265/HEVC, F-Log recording with a smooth gamma curve with a wide dynamic range, and Hybrid Log Gamma HLG recording for HDR video. The GFX100 is the first model in the GFX series to support ETERNA film simulation to fully realize operator ideas and a wide range of effects.

Sighting

GFX100 inherits the popular removable EVF GFX 50S, which can be angle-adjusted using the EVF Tilt Adapter EVF-TL1. OLED panel with the highest resolution of 5.76 million. Points was used to develop the GFX100 high definition EVF module. Viewfinder has a 0.86x magnification and contains five optical glass elements, including aspherical elements, and was specifically designed for the 102MP sensor, which requires extreme precision in focusing.

EVF can be set to “Frame Rate Priority”, “Resolution Priority” or “AF Speed Priority” depending on the characteristics of the subject and the needs of the photographer.

Rear-panel monitor uses a 3.2-inch 2.36 million-dot touch-sensitive LCD that can be tilted in three directions.

Easy operation

The number of buttons and switches in the camera has been reduced to a minimum to make it easy to operate the camera. On the left side is a mode dial that lets you instantly switch between stills, movies and multiple exposures. Camera settings exposure, white balance, film simulation and other settings can be saved for each mode. If you need to take photos and videos during a single photo shoot, just one swipe of the dial is enough to switch between settings.

The GFX100 has two optional displays for information output: a 1.8-inch LCD on top and a 2.05-inch LCD on the rear. EXIF, histogram and camera settings are shown on these large-print displays. The information displayed can be split between different displays EVI, rear panel LCD and optional top panel display . As a result, it is convenient to work when shooting with a connected computer, or when it is difficult to see the image on the viewfinder or other displays. Virtual command dial mode available for users who prefer to work with command dials. In this mode, the upper LCD display shows an image of a dial that rotates and can be adjusted with the front and rear control dials.

Lightweight and durable body

The GFX100’s sensor is 1.7 times the size of a 35mm format, but its dimensions 156.2mm W x 163.6mm H x 102.9mm D , 48.9mm at the narrowest part and weight approx. 1400 g with two batteries, memory card and electronic viewfinder comparable to the performance of a flagship full-frame DSLR.

The GFX100 is FUJIFILM’s first mirrorless camera with a built-in vertical grip. This design has maintained a form factor with a slim body that’s easy to operate, while the camera features IBIS image stabilization and two battery packs.

The body mount, IS mechanism and sensor of the GFX100 are insulated from the panels of the body to unleash its full 102MP shooting potential. This “dual design” provides a high level of accuracy and reliability while minimizing image degradation due to external influences on the body.

The camera body is sealed against dust and moisture with 95 weatherproof seals. As a result, the camera is capable of handling even the most demanding shooting conditions.

Other features

The GFX100 can be charged with two NP-T125 batteries and each battery charge takes approx. 800 frames. Camera charges and works via USB-C. By connecting an external battery with USB Power Delivery technology, you can shoot continuously and charge two batteries in the camera.

First camera in the GFX series to support IEEE802.11ac 5 GHz for fast wireless image transfer.

Like previous GFX series models, the GFX100 is compatible with the Tether Shooting Plug-in PRO for Adobe¼ Photoshop¼ Lightroom¼ and FUJIFILM’s Capture One Pro for RAW post-processing and PC synchronized shooting, which is often required by professional photographers.

Price and availability

FUJIFILM GFX100 sales launch scheduled for July 2019. Recommended retail price for Body package will be 769,999 Dollars
