Fixing perspective. In Adobe Camera RAW and Photoshop

In

we already discussed how to shoot architecture in landscape, and I mentioned there the correction of perspective distortion in post-processing. Letā€™s see how to do this. So first letā€™s choose a picture which we are going to work with. As an example, I took a photo from the Kalyan Mosque in Bukhara. I took it at a blue hour, when the brightness of the backlight was about the same as the evening sky. As a result thereā€™s no over highlighting of either the sky or the building, and the sky doesnā€™t look charcoal black, which is what you get when you shoot this at night.

All about the Nikon Z7 mirrorless camera

The picture was taken with a Nikon Z7 + Af-S Nikkor 14-24 f/2.8 Through a Nikon FTZ adapter , 18mm in one frame. Iā€™ve already processed this photo, I tightened the colors, but I didnā€™t correct the perspective.

I donā€™t want to tell you that I will not describe the Free Transform tool in this tutorial, because there are already many articles about it.

You can correct perspective distortions well enough already at this stage, and automatically. To do this, select the Transform Tool in the top toolbar of Adobe Camera RAW. Then in the settings panel on the right in the section Upright press A ā€“ automatic control of perspective. The result will be very good ā€“ this simple tool has perfectly straightened out the perspective. In case the automatic isnā€™t up to the task, you can use the sliders below the automatic settings to adjust the perspective manually.

, there is a tool called ā€œPerspective Warpā€ that allows you to adjust the perspective of an image. You can straighten lines and correct any distortions caused by the cameraā€™s perspective. Have you ever used this tool? If so, could you share some tips or tricks on how to effectively use it?

Yes, I have used the Perspective Warp tool. To effectively use it, first select the image you want to adjust. Then, go to Edit > Perspective Warp. Youā€™ll see a grid overlay on the image. Click on the corners of objects or lines that should be straightened. Use the control points to adjust the shape of the grid and fine-tune the perspective. To maintain natural results, focus on aligning vertical or horizontal lines with the grid. Use different grid levels for complex shapes. Remember to apply changes gradually and assess the overall balance of the image. Once done, click on Warp to finalize the adjustments. Perspective Warp is a powerful tool, but practice and experimenting will help you master it.

Yes, I have used the Perspective Warp tool in Photoshop before. One tip I have found to be helpful is to use the grid overlay feature to align the perspective of the image accurately. This helps in maintaining the right proportions and angles when adjusting the perspective. Also, using multiple grid lines can provide a better reference point for making precise adjustments. Another trick is to use the warp and grid tools together to fine-tune the perspective and create a more realistic effect. Practice and experimentation with different settings are key to mastering the Perspective Warp tool effectively.

To fix perspective issues in Adobe Camera RAW and Photoshop, you can use the Transform tool. In Camera RAW, go to the Lens Correction panel and select the Manual tab. Here, you can adjust vertical and horizontal perspective distortion by using the Vertical and Horizontal sliders. In Photoshop, go to Edit > Transform > Perspective or Edit > Transform > Skew to manually adjust the perspective.

To ensure lines are straightened out, use the Straighten tool in Camera RAW or the Ruler tool in Photoshop to draw a line that should be straight, then go to Image > Image Rotation > Arbitrary to straighten the image accordingly.

For enhanced perspective correction, use the Adaptive Wide Angle Filter in Photoshop to correct distortions in wide-angle photos. Additionally, utilizing the Grid tool in Photoshop can help align lines vertically and horizontally for precise adjustments.

Remember to always make adjustments non-destructively by creating adjustment layers or smart objects. With practice and patience, you can effectively correct perspective issues in your photos using Adobe Camera RAW and Photoshop.
