The 2019 Sony World Photography Awards competition set a record for the number of entrants
The Sony World Photography Awards is one of the largest and most prestigious international photography events. Every year we recognize the best contemporary photographic works created over the past year in a wide range of genres.
A total of 326,997 entrants from 195 countries applied to all four categories of the 2019 competition, more than in the history of the event.
Selection process for the finalists of the Open and Junior Competition
The Sony World Photography Awards judging panel includes recognized industry professionals, including representatives of world-famous museums, publishing houses, and media. They judge participants anonymously.
This year the Jury of the Open and Junior competition is presided by Rebecca McClelland from Saatchi & Saatchi and Prodigious Great Britain , where she is the Chief Photographer and Head of the Contemporary Art Department.
Hereâs what Rebecca McClelland says about the competition:
âI was struck by the variety of images that participants in the Open and Youth competitions sent us. Weâve taken a very democratic approach to photography, accepting works that are both classics and new trends. We welcome all genres, from landscape to fashion shots. It allows photographers from a wide range of social groups to showcase their talent.
The work of the jury is very difficult. Our goal is to give equal opportunities to absolutely all participants regardless of their chosen subjects, to make sure the selection is as honest as possible. Works are judged anonymously. This is extremely important because this is how we fight bias and patronage. I am looking forward to the exhibition at Somerset House where the whole world can see these striking works by contemporary photographers.
