Epson Expression Premium XP-800/XP-700 MFP test

Epson has introduced to the global market two new, unparalleled worldwide MFPs with Wi-Fi Direct and a combination of water-soluble and pigmented Claria Premium Ink.

Epson Expression Premium XP-700 MFP consists of a printer, scanner and copier Epson Expression Premium XP-800 MFP has an additional built-in fax machine and automatic feeder for plain paper. Both MFPs are positioned as devices for home printing, but, no doubt, they can be successfully used in small offices as well. The fundamental difference between the new models is the ability to connect to the Internet without an access point.

With support for the Epson Connect service, users can print images from iOS and Android smartphones without using a router and connect to multiple computers via Wi-Fi without an additional wireless network. This gives even more freedom to print. In addition, they allow scanning an image and transmitting it to a smartphone, using Wi-Fi.

Another distinctive feature of the new MFPs is the combined use of water-soluble and pigmented inks. The set consists of 5 cartridges: three color – cyan, magenta and yellow and two black – ordinary and photo. Color and photo black ink are water-soluble and conventional black ink is pigmented.

Note that the use of two black ink cartridges produces brilliant black and white images that rival the black depth and halftone range of the best silver halide photo papers. In addition to the MFP can purchase high-capacity cartridges, which will reduce printing costs.

The Epson Expression Premium XP-800 has a large 8.9 cm touchscreen LCD screen and two slots for different types of memory cards for convenient and easy operation. This makes it possible not only to print, but also to edit images although with a few functions directly from the MFP without using a PC.

The high quality of images Epson Expression Premium XP-800 also contributes to a large print resolution 5760 × 1440 dpi and the minimum ink drop size – 1.5 picoliters. The scanner has a resolution of 2400×4800.

Printing time for a color picture of 10×15 cm is 12 seconds, and for an A4-size print – about 1 minute.

Standard paper tray holds 120 sheets and prints at 32 ppm. Minimum weight of paper – 64 g/m2, maximum – 300 g/m2.

MFP Epson Expression Premium XR-800 has ENERGY STAR certificate confirming the high energy efficiency class of the device.

Advantages of Epson printers and MFPs for home use are their compact size and small weight. Epson Expression Premium XR-800 has the dimensions 390×341×191 mm and occupies a small area of the desktop. The weight of the Epson Expression Premium XR-800 MFP is 8.7 kg.

Tests

For printing we used Epson photo papers and our traditionally used Wedge World Fig. 1 Figures 2 and 3 show the test results of two types of photo papers: Epson Premium Semigloss 251 g/m2 And Epson Matte Paper – Heavyweight 167 g/m2.

It is well known that the quality of color reproduction and therefore the quality of the print depends on the characteristics of the printer, the type of ink and the photo paper used. As Fig. 2, on Epson Semigloss paper the color reproduction curves are close to ideal, except for the maximum densities, which are of little subject matter. Only the yellow dye gives lower maximum densities. Contrast more exactly, the average gradient equal to 1-1.1 makes it possible to accurately reproduce the gradation of the subject, which is a definite advantage of the printer and the paper.

Fig. 3 matte paper color reproduction curves are shown. All matte papers are known to have lower contrast and maximum densities. It should be noted that Matte Paper’s color curve performance is flawless across the entire range of measured densities, although the average gradient is slightly lower, from 0.82 to 0.91. The prints we got on the Epson Expression Premium XR-800 MFP and Epson papers are very high quality. We do not list them due to space constraints, but anyone who acquires this model will be able to see this for themselves.

Summary

The Epson Expression Premium XP-800 is a new multifunctional device with high printing quality and a wide range of options designed for the most demanding customers.
