On September 7, 2011 at the exhibition complex Business Design Center the jury chose the winner out of 8 finalists. Student Adrian Mankowiecki wins with portable stain remover.

His invention freshens clothes and destroys stains with negative ions and steam. The device runs on a sugar battery.

The jury was impressed by Adrian’s perceptive thinking and creativity. They noted the main motive for choosing the winner: “The portable stain remover was developed with an understanding of consumer insights, it meets the needs of consumers.

This is an instant cleaner which has a beneficial effect on the environment by reducing emissions to the atmosphere. It is interactive and intuitive to use. We all wanted to buy it.”.

Henrik Otto, Vice President of Global Design at Electrolux, added that he personally liked the similarity of the invention with ErgoRapido, stressing that “it’s a new, unusual way to take care of clothes ‘on the go’, while taking into account the delicacy of materials”.

“We are looking forward to Adrian Mankowiecki starting his internship at Electrolux Design Center in Stockholm” says Henrik Otto. “But, of course, we were impressed by all the competitors.”.

Intelligent mobility: do this, don’t know what

Theme 9 of the contest – Intelligent mobility. Students were asked to create ideas for appliances that allow people to cook, wash, clean their apartment, and wash dishes.

The appliances need to be not only mobile and compact, but also more flexible in terms of control, freeing people from having to be at home.

The assignment involves creating a technique that inspires and allows you to express the personality of its owner, while incorporating modern technology, implies a system of support and guidance.

In addition, all concepts must reflect the principles of Scandinavian design – care for the environment, simplicity and intuitiveness in use, aesthetic appearance.

Off the pedestal and back to work

One of the objectives of the competition is to create an innovative platform to introduce the market to young talented designers and the latest products.

The jury evaluates the contenders based on innovation, intuitive design and consumer insight.

Presentation skills are also very important, as the 8 finalists take part in a final event where they defend their designs in front of a jury of recognized designers.

This year the jury was made up of Danish designer Cecile Manz, architects Haer and James Slade and Henrik Otto, vice president of global design at Electrolux.

Grand prize – 5000 euro and 6 months paid internship at Electrolux Design Center.

Second prize: €3,000 and third prize: €2,000. After the finals, the concepts travel around the world and are exhibited at design shows.

Taking part in the Electrolux Design Lab has helped many contestants gain employment and business opportunities.

Several finalists are already working at the Electrolux Design Center and last year’s winner has a six-month apprenticeship.
