Dyson against coronavirus

To combat the coronavirus, Dyson has teamed up with The Technology Partnership to develop CoVent, a new ventilator.

CoVent

This project was requested by the UK government and carried out with the help of outside experts from the National Health Service and the UK Government’s medicines service.

“At the heart of the new unit is a digitally controlled Dyson engine, which has been specifically adapted to meet the clinical needs of patients with coronavirus.

The device is portable and battery-operated, so it can also be used in field hospitals and when transporting patients.

The user interface is designed with clinical and operational demands in mind, so it’s safe for medical professionals to operate and familiar to them.

James Dyson addressed an open letter to company employees. We publish it virtually in its entirety:

  • ” When Prime Minister Boris Johnson called me ten days ago, we redirected Dyson’s resources to work with TTP The Technology Partnership to develop and produce the groundbreaking CoVent ventilator.
  • This device can be produced quickly, efficiently and in large batches.

It is designed to meet the specific clinical needs of coronavirus patients and is suitable for use in a variety of clinical settings. The main challenge was to design and launch a new complex medical product in an extremely short time frame in large batches. And so began the race to launch the CoVent…

  • Designed to provide a high-quality, safe and stable air supply…
  • The CoVent ventilators are regulated products, so Dyson and TTP will work with the National Drugs Agency and the UK government to validate the design and manufacturing process. We received our first order from the UK government for 10,000 CoVent units, which we will fulfill on an open-documentation basis. We are also looking for ways to make the product available internationally.
  • I’m proud of what Dyson engineers and our partners at TTP have achieved, and I’m excited to see the CoVent in manufacturing and hospitals as soon as possible. This is a time of serious international crisis, so I will be donating 5,000 ventilators around the world, including 1,000 to the U.K.

How effective is the Dyson technology in combating the spread of coronavirus? Are there any specific features or adaptations in their products that target the virus specifically, or is it just a general cleaning and air purifying system?
