CES 2020: New Samsung QLED 8K TV

At the show

CES 2020 in Las Vegas, Samsung Electronics has shown an updated line of QLED 8K TVs.

Samsung Q950

Samsungā€™s QLED 8K 2020 lineup uses advanced AI capabilities to enhance audio, video, and smart tools.

Tizen OS also makes voice commands easier to use and gives you access to new features like Tap View, Digital Butler and the Samsung Health platform.

Samsungā€™s innovation is embodied in the new flagship Q950TS QLED 8K ā€“ the industryā€™s first TV with surround sound, high 8K resolution and an ultra-thin form factor.

Design

The Samsung Q950 models have virtually no bezel around the display, making the ratio of screen area to TV body almost 99% ā€“ the highest in the market.

When viewed from a distance of 3 to 4.5 meters, viewers get the impression of a ā€œborderlessā€ screen, as the space between the display and what surrounds it virtually disappears.

Q950ā€™s body thickness is 15mm across the screen. The TV can fit flush against a wall or look spectacular when placed on a special stand.

Image quality

Samsung QLED 8K line is one of the first in the industry to support playback of native 8K content.

In 2020, viewers will be able to view and stream AV1 standard 8K video on the QLED 8K. All of Samsungā€™s 2020 series 8K TVs have this feature.

Samsung is also working with partners like YouTube to create new ways to stream in native 8K resolution.

AI ScaleNet technology ensures quality transmission by optimizing available network bandwidth. It performs provider-side video compression and then reconstructs it on the TV, effectively halving the network bandwidth requirements needed for streaming. Samsung Electronics continues to work with Amazon on this feature, using AI ScaleNet technology for both standard-definition and 4K content for Prime Video subscribers.

The Samsung Q950 TV features Samsungā€™s advanced semiconductor technology, including the powerful, next-generation Quantum 8K processor, which provides enhanced content resolution capabilities through artificial intelligence and uses machine learning algorithms to analyze and characterize individual pixels. The algorithm then reconstructs the various image elements to create an exceptionally sharp 8K picture, regardless of the quality of the original image.

Q950 harnesses the power of AI to ensure nothing distracts viewers. Whereas in common TV-sets the sensors can only adjust the brightness of the screen based on external lighting in the room, the Adaptive Picture technology takes into account the distribution of light in a particular scene, thus ensuring a constantly clear image and high contrast.

Sound

  • The Samsung Q950 TV features speakers on each side of the screen, as well as subwoofers in the back. With Object Tracking Sound+ technology, which uses artificial intelligence-based software to match the dynamics of sound with the movement of objects on the display, the novelty is clear and clean 5.1-channel surround sound.
  • Samsung Q950 TV can adjust the volume of the dialogues on the screen, taking into account the typical external sounds, such as blender or vacuum cleaner. Active Voice Amplifier AVA technology detects external sounds and automatically enhances speech clarity.
  • The Samsung Q950 provides the ability to use the built-in speakers as an additional audio channel when connected to the Q 2020 series soundbars, such as the Q800, which won the Best of Innovation 2020 award at CES 2020. Q-Symphony technology allows you to combine audio from both devices to create a dynamic, multidimensional soundscape.
