CES 2019: Whirlpool’s smart kitchen appliances

Whirlpool offers an entire ecosystem of smart home appliances, including freestanding ovens, built-in ovens, microwave ovens and dishwashers. Each model is equipped with smart technology that saves consumers time and offers intuitive controls throughout the entire meal creation process.

At CES 2019, Whirlpool unveiled 28 models of “smart” kitchen appliances. Appliance integrates with Yummly digital cooking platform with food recognition, voice control from Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa.

Compatible withYummly, a digital platform with recipes from celebrity chefs, cooking resources, video tutorials and handy hints.

The platform allows you not only to simplify the process of cooking, but also to plan the menu for the week with ease.

So, food recognition technology using a mobile app identifies available ingredients from a photo and compiles a selection of suitable recipes, taking into account the user’s preferences.

The platform has been available since December 2018 and already contains an extensive food base that is generated by machine learning.

Yummly menu planning app will be available in 2019.

You can use the mobile app to create a meal plan for the desired period of time. It is only necessary to “tell” about the preferences in food indicate a favorite cuisine, ingredients, food allergens, desired cooking time and the service will automatically make a selection of appropriate recipes, taking into account the products that are on hand.

Voice control

• Increasing consumer demand for voice-activated control of appliances while cooking. Whirlpool products will be compatible with popular voice assistant systems, including:
  1. Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. In 2019, it will be easy to control Whirlpool kitchen appliances with voice commands. Google Assistant or Alexa on any device will easily run errands without having to name the brand or device every time.
  2. Yummly Voice. The new Yummly voice control app can help you understand recipes without touching your phone or tablet. Just say the command and the app will tell you what the next step is.

Mobile App

In addition, the Whirlpool brand introduces additional remote control options through its own namesake mobile app. Using your smartphone or tablet, it’s easy to give commands to appliances from anywhere in your home. The app offers personalized instructions for each user based on their needs and tasks, the ability to create manual settings, such as temperature levels, and communicate them directly to the app. For example, Whirlpool’s smart dishwashers allow families to create and upload a personalized cleaning cycle to the settings system.

“The Smart Oven

At CES 2019, the Whirlpool brand also unveiled a prototype of a remotely controlled built-in oven. The traditional glass door is replaced by a control center in the form of a 68.5 cm transparent LCD interface. It allows you not only to set the desired cooking settings, but also to get useful tips and step-by-step recommendations.

• The oven can make a selection of recipes based on each family member’s desires and offer detailed instructions for optimal results.
• Oven syncs with each family member’s calendar. For example, if the appliance notices an unoccupied slot in the calendar in the evening, it can suggest a suitable recipe for quick cooking and select the ingredients that meet personal preferences.
• A digital Yummly platform is also available in the oven interface. Users can view step-by-step recipe videos right on the appliance door. No more leafing through cumbersome books – just select the recipe of interest from the oven interface.
• Preparing a multi-course dinner for a large family is always a challenge. The bottom line is that while one dish is cooling on the table, another hasn’t even gotten to the point of being ready. The new oven will solve this problem. The appliance door details the cooking process and calculates the time and necessary steps so that a multi-course dinner is ready on time.
• While cooking, you have to open the door several times to check if the food is ready. But it causes temperature fluctuations and dinner is delayed. Avoiding these situations is helped by a maximum magnification internal viewing system – users can check if their food is ready right in the interface of the oven door.
