CES 2019: LG TVs with THINQ AI technology

At CES 2019, LG Electronics LG unveiled new TVs with ThinQ AI technology. LG’s 2019 TV lineup provides access to a wide range of services with elements of artificial intelligence across multiple platforms, including the recently introduced Amazon Alexa along with built-in Google Assistant.

α9 Gen 2 AI technology

The α9 Gen 2 technology used in LG’s Z9, W9, E9 and C9 series OLED TVs improves picture and sound quality through a deep learning algorithm based on an extensive database of more than one million images that recognizes the quality of the content source and determines the best way to optimize visual output.

With enhanced processing capabilities, the LG Z9 88-inch 8K organic LED TV delivers extremely realistic 8K resolution images with the highest clarity, color saturation and detail thanks to 8K-upscaling and enhanced noise reduction.

In addition to recognizing the source of content, the new processor accurately adjusts tonal compression based on viewing conditions to optimize screen brightness, leveraging its inherent ability to “understand” how the human eye perceives images in different lighting conditions. This processor uses an ambient light sensor at the point of use of the TV.

By measuring light levels, the sensor automatically adjusts brightness, compensating as needed. α9 Gen 2 AI technology is able to further enhance the reproduction of high dynamic range content by adjusting the brightness, so that even the darkest scenes become incredibly contrasty, detailed and chromatically rich even in brightly lit rooms. And by using the latest Dolby Vision image correction technology from Dolby, LG televisions deliver truly true HDR images in varying room lighting conditions.

Sound quality is enhanced by an intelligent algorithm capable of up-mixing two-channel audio content to a convincing

spatial audio. α9 Gen 2 optimizes output based on content type, making voices clearer, particularly in movies, TV shows and newscasts. Users can adjust sound settings according to the acoustics of the room or allow LG televisions to intelligently set performance levels to perfectly match their location. Moreover, LG flagship televisions support Dolby Atmos for incredibly realistic sound and an enhanced sense of sonic immersion in the action.

First implemented in 2018 TVs with ThinQ AI technology, the Google Assistant service is also built into the 2019 lineup, allowing users to effortlessly perform everyday tasks, find answers to questions and control compatible smart home devices. Consumers no longer need to pick up their phone to, say, order a pizza, but can do it from their TV without stopping their TV program.

  • By pressing the Amazon Prime Video button on the Magic Remote, users can control smart home devices, ask questions, access a host of features and even perfectly customize the Alexa Routine system with wake-up or alert alarms, traffic information and switching favorite TV channels – all with voice control.
  • Alexa features for music playback, weather control or access to a number of visually enhanced options, including the Food Network for finding recipes and comprehending the art of cooking. Keeping your house in order, shopping on Amazon or taking a long-awaited long trip to Australia, New Zealand and the surrounding islands in the latter case, just say something like, “Book a room on the Gold Coast” on the Kayak search engine is no problem either.
  • New speech recognition feature makes it easier than ever before to get the right answers. By understanding the context of what’s being said, these TVs give users the ability to make more complex requests, saving them from having to issue a series of repetitive commands to get the results they want.

The service will be available on LG TVs with ThinQ AI technology in more than 140 countries.

  • The α9 Gen 2 processor is also used in LG’s flagship 75-inch LCD TV for 2019 with 8K resolution SM99 model .

LG’s premium line of 2019 LCD TVs SM9X and SM8X series will be released under the new name NanoCell TV to reinforce the emphasis on the image enhancement provided by NanoCell technology NanoColor , color accuracy with a wide viewing angle NanoAccuracy and a stylish extra narrow bezel around the screen NanoBezel . In addition, LG NanoCell TVs feature enhanced picture and sound with artificial intelligence using deep learning algorithm and optimization provided by ThinQ AI technology.

LG

Featuring HDMI 2 ports.1 all 2019 organic LED TVs and some NanoCell TVs with ThinQ AI technology support high frame rate HFR .

  • As a result, fast-moving scenes, such as sports broadcasts and fast-paced movies, are smoother and clearer when played at 120 FPS.
  • Support for enhanced audio return channel eARC allows home theater enthusiasts to seamlessly take advantage of HDMI connectivity and enjoy the highest quality audio in a variety of formats with superior detail and depth.
  • Good news for gamers: The new TVs support variable refresh rate VBR and automatic low latency mode ALLM , resulting in a smoother, less garbled picture.
