CES 2019: Bosch strengthens its position as a leading company in the Internet of Things

The Internet of Things is increasingly changing our world. At the largest consumer electronics show, CES 2019 in Las Vegas, Bosch demonstrates what the Internet of Things can do today. The range of solutions is huge: from the shuttle bus, which represents a new type of vehicle, to refrigerators with Internet connection, capable of giving advice on storing food, and smart lawnmowers, learning how to perform tasks.

“Bosch saw the enormous potential of the Internet of Things early on in its development. For almost 10 years, we have been actively creating a world of things with Internet connectivity,” says Bosch board member Dr. Markus Hein. – Today we are the leading company in the IoT. Step by step, we have expanded the capabilities of the software and our expertise in information technology. With the help of its own cloud system, the company has implemented more than 270 projects in areas such as mobility, smart home, smart city and agriculture. The number of sensors and devices connected to the Bosch IoT Suite has grown by 40 percent in the past year, and now reaches 8.5 million.

One of the key elements of the future growth and new business opportunities of the Internet of Things is artificial intelligence. Bosch is also playing a decisive role in the development of developments in this area. “We can realize the potential of the Internet of Things if we combine it with artificial intelligence and continue to develop them in parallel,” says Hein. From this point of view, the two fields are complementary: “The Internet of Things cannot do without intelligence. Using Internet-connected things to collect data could be a strong boost for artificial intelligence.

Only with its help do things get smart and learn to solve problems on their own. Our main goal is to improve people’s daily lives, increase their free time, and improve safety, efficiency, and comfort.”. Hein illustrates the use of video fire detectors that analyze images and can detect fires in seconds – even before the security system’s sensors detect temperature rise and smoke. Thus, the fire can be recognized much earlier than with fire alarms or smoke detectors, and thus save someone’s life.

The second key success factor on the road to the IoT era is collaboration. According to Bosch, harmony can be achieved by combining the efforts of traditional and new market players. Recently the Group has signed an agreement with the Canadian developer Mojio. The agreement has already resulted in a fully integrated Internet of Things platform for Internet-connected cars. In the event of an accident, a special algorithm developed by Bosch can immediately determine where and when the accident occurred, how serious it is.

Through the Mojio cloud, the data are instantly transmitted to the Bosch emergency contact center, which in turn sends the call immediately to the local emergency service. At the same time, the messages are forwarded to a previously defined list of numbers or via the Mojio app. “Together with Mojio, we are connecting vehicles directly to the cloud system. This allows rescuers to get to the scene of an accident much faster,” Mike Mansuetti, president of Bosch North America, told CES. Emergency solutions will be available to nearly a million drivers in North America and Europe starting mid-next year.

The Internet of Things on the Road: Bosch Introduces Autonomous Driving of the Future

Bosch presents a new self-designed shuttle bus at CES for the first time. In this vehicle, the company demonstrates its technology in the areas of automation, Internet connection and electrification. Visitors to the exhibition were able to test unmanned shuttles which will soon hit the streets. “The creation of this shuttle is a contribution to our concept of transportation: no exhausts, no accidents and no stress,” commented Hein.

For transportation on such shuttles, Bosch will supply not only a set of different components and solutions, but also a variety of mobile services, such as: travel reservations, hitchhiking, recharging and parking services. Bosch believes that such connected services are essential to the driving and transportation of the future. The projected market volume of such services is very high: In 2017, it was 47 billion euros, and by 2022, according to experts, it will be 140 billion euros source: PwC . Bosch certainly plans to take a share of this market and, by offering their solutions, is aiming for double-digit growth. For Hein, there’s no doubt about it: “In the future, all transportation will use Bosch electronic services combined into a smart ecosystem.”.

One of the latest obstacles to the project is automating vehicles in complex urban environments. Bosch sees a win-win solution. In the second half of last year, the Californian city of San Jose became a pilot site for testing a fully autonomous, unmanned ridesharing service developed by Bosch and Daimler. The three parties have already signed a letter of intent to that effect. Bosch and Daimler aim to optimize city traffic, improve road safety and lay the foundation for a functioning urban transportation system in the future. Their goal is to develop a road system for fully automated driving systems SAE level 4/5 automation that will go into production early in the next decade

Bosch will also unveil a new image advertising campaign at CES 2019. The centerpiece will be a hip-hop video starring a seasoned IoT user,” says Jia Shaoqia. With “Like a Bosch,” the company, founded in 1886, is breaking new ground in tone and approach. This PR activity consists of many “Like a boss” videos and memes, which are now very popular.

These videos reflect the daily lives of people who perform bizarre tricks or find their way out of difficult situations with the deft handling of appliances. The image campaign changed a few letters to give new impetus to this Internet phenomenon. The protagonist of the Bosch video is a young man who is always on-trend thanks to Bosch’s Internet-connected solutions.
