Canon introduces the ultimate compact camera – the revolutionary PowerShot G1 X

London, UK, 9th January 2012. – Canon launches PowerShot G1 X, a revolutionary new compact camera with a large CMOS sensor, offering DSLR-quality images and exceptional D-SLR-quality operability in a highly portable, metal body. Designed for professionals and advanced amateurs alike, the PowerShot G1 X marks the arrival of a new category of models at the top of Canon’s legendary G range, and sets new standards of excellence for compact cameras.

Canon PowerShot G1 X compact camera

The PowerShot G1 X is as much a high end camera as it is an ideal complement to a professional DSLR. Combining EOS sensor technology, a powerful DIGIC 5 processor, Canon’s new high-precision lens, and extensive manual controls makes it the best compact camera we’ve ever produced. Incredibly portable, the PowerShot G1 X features a zoom lens that’s concealed within a slim but durable metal body. Photographers can be assured of consistently high image quality with this convenient, truly mobile camera.

Professional quality images

Incorporating exclusive Canon technologies trusted by professionals around the world, the PowerShot G1 X offers image quality previously available only in DSLR cameras. It’s Canon’s first compact model to feature a large 14.3-megapixel 4:3 CMOS sensor 18.7mm x 14mm , which is the same height as the APS-C sensors used in EOS DSLRs. The same size and pixel structure as the EOS 600D, and a surface area approximately 6.3 times larger than that of the famous PowerShot G12, result in DSLR-quality performance in a small body, so you can take the camera anywhere.

Increased sensor size means photographers can better control depth of field, creatively separating the subject from the background. An improved dynamic range means shadows and highlights can be captured accurately, while 14.3-megapixel resolution means you can create larger prints or crop images to create more effective compositions.

The PowerShot G1 X also offers a number of advantages through CMOS sensor technologies developed for Canon’s EOS series. Built-in noise reduction ensures clear images even at high ISO settings. Four-channel readout for fast shooting speeds and fast camera response in all conditions.

HS System combining large sensor and DIGIC 5 image processor in the PowerShot G1 X sets new standards for low light performance – with a maximum ISO range of 100 to 12800, never before possible in Canon compact cameras. Photographers can shoot without flash even in low light for high quality images with stunning detail and low noise.

High-end lens technologies

Using the same manufacturing processes and quality standards as the renowned EF lens series, the PowerShot G1 X delivers professional-quality images. Ultra-high refractive index UA aspherical elements and high-precision glass-casting technology result in a compact lens that satisfies even the most demanding photographers. The lens retracts completely into the camera body, and the 4x optical zoom covers the 28-112mm focal length range, giving photographers the ability to creatively change the composition and perspective of the frame. 6-blade aperture diaphragm lets you create beautiful background blur.

For optimal clarity in Full HD stills and movies, the lens features Optical Image Stabilizer IS , which offers a 4-step exposure advantage. It lets photographers shoot in low light and use shutter speeds four stops slower than would be possible without IS. Optical Image Stabilizer supports Intelligent IS technology that analyzes focal length, focus distance, and camera movement type, then applies the most appropriate stabilization mode[1].. Hybrid IS technology, for example, is designed to eliminate blur caused by camera shake during macro shooting.

The lens contains a built-in 3-stop filter ND , allowing you to use a wider aperture in bright light to achieve a shallower depth of field or apply slower shutter speeds to deliberately blur a moving subject.

Get more control

The shooting controls traditionally offered by the PowerShot G series have been enhanced with the PowerShot G1 X through full manual control. Dials for mode selection and exposure compensation give quick access to favorite settings. For maximum control over the final image, the PowerShot G1 X integrates perfectly into the workflow of photographers using EOS cameras. This model supports shooting in RAW 14 bit format, allowing you to capture smooth gradations of tone and natural colors, which can then be fine-tuned using the included Digital Photo Professional DPP software.

PowerShot G1 X captures the fastest action: in High-speed Burst HQ mode, a series of six full-resolution images are recorded at 4.5 frames per second. Users can also shoot at 1.9 frames per second in JPEG format until the memory card is full – in case they need to record a longer action sequence.

High-quality Full HD video

The PowerShot G1 X can capture Full HD 1080p movies at 24 frames per second. and is equipped with a dedicated video recording button. Another advantage of the CMOS sensor is the ability to shoot high quality movies even in low light and with a shallow depth of field, typically associated with larger sensors. 4x optical zoom can also be used in movies, giving users more options. Also records stereo sound.

The pro’s choice

The PowerShot G1 X’s sturdy metal casing and compact size make it an exceptionally reliable and comfortable camera. The large 7.5 cm 3.0″ PureColor II VA variable angle LCD screen lets you shoot from virtually any angle and in any position to create the composition you want. Bright, high-resolution 920K display. Points provides crisp, detailed images when framing and viewing. OVF with diopter adjustment allows photographers to shoot according to their individual needs and preferences. New built-in pop-up flash provides additional illumination of the scene. Can also use external Canon Speedlite flashes fitted to hot shoe mounts.

Enhanced Shooting Modes

A range of advanced shooting modes help photographers when shooting in challenging conditions. For example, if you shoot handheld in the dark, when shooting night scenes without a tripod, the camera will record a sequence of frames at high speed and combine the data into a single image with good exposure and minimal blur. High Dynamic Range HDR mode for high-contrast scenes. Multiple identical images with different exposures are combined for superb detail in shadows and highlights.

More features with accessories

Ideal for EOS DSLR users, the PowerShot G1 X is compatible with a range of EOS accessories that enhance the camera’s capabilities. Canon EX Speedlite flashes can be used for creative lighting. The WP-DC44 Waterproof Case provides waterproof protection to depths of 40m, ideal for shooting in heavy rain or underwater, whilst allowing the photographer to access all camera controls.

The optional FA-DC58C Lens Filter Adapter lets you use a variety of filters, such as circular polarizing filters to enhance the sky or remove reflections. Another useful accessory is the Macro Ring Flash Adapter MLA-DC1 , allowing users to attach Canon macro ring or twin flash from within the EOS system.

Unrivalled levels of control along with unprecedented image quality make the PowerShot G1 X the ideal camera for professionals and advanced amateurs who want the flexibility and quality of a DSLR in a compact camera.
