Canon introduces a system of devices for remote video production and live streaming

Canon has introduced a new remote shooting system comprising three pan/tilt/zoom PTZ cameras – CR N500, CR N300 and CR X500 – and the RC IP100 controller. The devices are the answer to the ever-growing demand for content and the need for efficient and compact production equipment. Over the past year, remote video production expanded at an all-time high: Between March and April of last year, the number of live shots alone jumped by 45 percent.

CR-N300

The CR-N500 and CR-N300 indoor and CR-X500 outdoor PTZ cameras combine Canon’s advanced imaging and connectivity technologies to deliver high-quality 4K UHD video, and are compatible with a variety of IP protocols, including the newly developed XC protocol for easy and efficient remote shooting. The new XC protocol, together with the RC-IP100 controller and Remote Camera Control Application, will allow other compatible Canon devices to be used with the new products and help content creators tailor their equipment system to their needs. Canon has also planned a software release that will add compatibility with the Cinema EOS family of cameras. This will provide users with a flexible, all-in-one solution that meets the universal demands of the remote video production market.

Compatible with various IP protocols

Combining Canon’s network and video technologies, the CR N500 and CR N300 provide IP streaming and live recording in high quality. Both models support such protocols as RTMP/RTMPS, NDI|HXii, RTP/RTSP, and the new XC protocol developed by Canon, which is standard for the company’s cameras. This allows you to stream video directly to your chosen content delivery network for more efficient workflow. The CR N500 supports Canon’s Log 3 gamut and Wide DR mode, giving you high-quality HDR images in both live action and post-production recording. Film crews can rely on the CR X500 even when working outdoors, as the camera’s rugged and reliable body is rated IP55 for water and dust resistance. Remote control over serial interface is possible and has a built-in lens cleaner, so weather conditions won’t get in the way of great video.

The new PTZ cameras are designed in line with today’s workflows and offer a range of popular connectivity options. The CR N500 and CR N300 support PoE+ Power over Ethernet , HDMI and 3G-SDI, flexibly adapting to different usage scenarios. In addition, the CR N300 is equipped with an optional USB port. And the CR X500 delivers 4K UHD video at up to 60P, using 12G-SDI over a single cable, for exceptional quality and seamless integration into your existing workflows.

Superb image quality

To meet the demand for 4K content, all of the PTZ cameras on display include Canon’s latest image processing technology, which delivers the same quality as our professional camcorders. The CR N500 and CR N300 feature a DIGIC DV6 processor to deliver outstanding 4K UHD resolution at 30P frame rates and 4:2:2 10-bit sampling. The CR X500 uses two DIGIC DV6 processors to let us shoot 4K UHD video at 60p and a similar sample rate. For even smoother video we’ve added a 1inch CMOS sensor and Canon’s acclaimed Dual Pixel CMOS AF to the CR N500 and CR X500, bringing you the precision and speed of focus that is especially difficult to achieve in 4K movies. The CR N300 uses a 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor and a hybrid autofocus system that brings the camera into clear, fast focus even in low light – think live broadcasts without studio lights, such as from a lecture theatre.

Thanks to Canon’s innovative optical technologies, all three models retain optical 4K resolution throughout the zoom range, helping the operator to bring the viewer closer to the action. The CR N500 and CR X500 feature a 15x optical zoom, while the CR N300 has a 20x optical zoom. Each model features image stabilization, ensuring smooth video without jitter – whether you’re shooting at wide angle or telephoto. The CR X500 also supports an additional 30x zoom when shooting in Full HD, for those times when you want to get close-ups from long distances.

RC-IP100

Easy and precise operation

The CR N500 and CR N300 feature a 0.1°/s pan and tilt mechanism: its precise, fluid movement helps you get the perfect shot in any environment. The CR N500 and CR N300 indoor PTZ cameras can be easily integrated into existing systems through compatibility with RC IP100 and Remote Camera Control over IP, as well as certain third-party controllers. The CR X500 connects to the RC IP100 controller via a serial interface.

RC IP100 allows one operator to control up to 100 PTZ cameras simultaneously. The controller offers advanced control of various settings, including focus, white balance and shutter speed. Controlled by a multi-function joystick and professional zoom-in/out switch for smooth transitions between wide angle and telephoto positions. These versatile controls noticeably simplify your work, allowing you to achieve great professional results. The RC IP100 and Remote Camera Control app gives you the freedom to set up to 100 pre-set positions, and preset 10 camera movement patterns, which can then be played back in sequence with the press of a button.

Canon’s new PTZ controller fits all budgets and shooting processes. Free Remote Camera Control is software for computers and tabletsiii that can operate up to 20 Canon PTZ cameras, and the images from 9 of them can be viewed on screen. Controls via the app allow you to fine-tune settings such as aperture, white balance and gain from the keyboard.
