Canon’s exceptional range of lenses over 70 EF and EF S lenses cater for a wide variety of genres, uses and skills – and is unyielding in its commitment to expanding the range of visual expression. EOS cameras have been trusted for years by photographers at the cutting edge of technology. This has allowed Canon to maintain its leadership position in the global interchangeable-lens digital camera market for 16 consecutive years, from 2003 to 2018 .

The EOS system came into being in March 1987 with the EOS 650 single-lens reflex camera with a next-generation autofocus system and the world’s first fully electronic mount. Production of EOS series cameras began at the Sappo factory in Fukushima, and now they are made, under the strictest quality control, at many other plants, in particular in Taiwan, in Miyazaki, Nagasaki and, of course, at the main Canon factory in Oita. Following the release of the EOS 650, Canon continued to develop innovative products and technology, focusing on shooting speed, usability and image quality. The high quality EOS-1 was launched in 1989 and the EOS 500 in 1993, aimed at a wide range of photographers from amateurs to professionals.

Digital still cameras DSLRs took over the market at the beginning of the 21st century, and the company invested in ever more attractive solutions. The core concept of the EOS series now included the aspect of superior image quality. This was achieved by using its own advanced technologies, including CMOS sensors and DIGIC image processors. EOS 300D, an affordable, compact, lightweight digital camera, made a major contribution to the growth of digital interchangeable-lens cameras for the non-professional photographer. EOS 5D and EOS 1D series cameras were highly acclaimed by professionals EOS 5D Mark II in particular was the first DSLR to offer high-quality video recording. In 2011, Canon carved out a niche in video production by introducing Cinema EOS, the first family of professional digital cinema equipment, and entered the B2B space in video content production.

Canon continues to explore new approaches, building on the success of the EOS series and the original EF mount to give photographers and filmmakers a wealth of shooting options. In 2018, for example, the company launched the EOS R camera system with a new usa mount. Expanding the boundaries of visual expression – both in photography and in video – the EOS series, together with a wide range of EF lenses, reaches a broad audience from first-time amateurs to seasoned professionals. Speed, ease of use and high image quality continue to underpin the entire EOS series, enabling it to evolve even further and expand photographic and video capabilities.
