Bosch dishwashers: boiling stones – a strong effect

The innovative and environmentally friendly Zeolite™ drying system in a dishwasher made by Bosch und Siemens Hausger&auml te GmbH BSH was honored in Berlin with the Utopia Award 2010.

Utopia.de, the world’s largest online platform for strategic consumption and green living, announced the environmentally friendly technology as the winner in the Products category.

The new BSH dishwashers with Zeolite™ technology use up to 30% less energy than top-class energy-efficient appliances – while making a major contribution to climate protection and the environment.

Can the dishwasher speed up sustainability?? The 2010 Utopia Awards jury gave a confident “yes” to this question and chose the BSH-designed and manufactured dishwasher with a Zeolite™ drying system as the winner in the Products category.

Chairman of the jury Rainer Grieshammer of the Eco-Institut g. Freiburg noted: &bdquo A dishwasher with a Zeolite™ drying system breaks new ground in efficiency among home appliances.”. High-performance consumer products with a high degree of innovation, capable of making an impact on society, entered the competition. Suggestions were accepted from members of the Utopia interactive platform.de: students, readers and journalists, and was then judged by an expert jury.

&bdquo We are particularly delighted with the Utopia Award, because the jury represents a critical but at the same time very responsible customer group,” said Michael Rosenbauer, Development Manager of the BSH dishwasher division.

The innovative drying system utilizes the properties of a natural mineral, zeolite. Zeolite which means “boiling stones” can absorb moisture and produce heat energy in the process. BSH developers took this effect into account and used the mineral in the dishwasher during the drying stage. In the base of the appliance there is a special tank filled with zeolite where water is directed at the end of washing up, thus creating dry hot air which is then supplied to the washing area and dries the dishes. For the first time, not even plastic dishes are dripping.

&bdquo With the introduction of the Zeolite™ drying system, we marked a milestone in the development of our efficient appliances,” says Ulf Engelbrecht, sales manager of innovative dishwashers at BSH. &bdquo We have halved the energy consumption of our appliances over the past 20 years. The latest generation Zeolite™ dishwasher uses only 0.73 kWh of energy and 7 liters of water to wash a full cycle of 13 loads of dishes. It’s a worldwide breakthrough that protects the environment and the consumer’s wallet.

      Boiling stones are small ceramic balls placed in the bottom of the Bosch dishwasher tub to help improve the efficiency of the dishwashing process. When the dishwasher heats up the water during the wash cycle, the boiling stones help to increase the water temperature quickly and maintain it at an optimal level throughout the cycle. This ensures that dishes are cleaned thoroughly and bacteria are effectively eliminated. The strong effect of the boiling stones enhances the dishwasher’s performance by providing a more powerful and reliable cleaning process, leading to sparkling clean dishes every time.
