Making it to the finals is a significant event in a photographer’s life, as the Sony World Photography Awards provides an exceptional opportunity to showcase their work to an international audience and demonstrate their own unconventional vision of contemporary photography. Now all the finalists of the Professional Competition will also compete in their category for the title of

“Photographer of the Year”

, The winner will be announced on April 17.

The Professional Competition shortlisted a stunning series of works in 10 different categories. All of the series represent the incredible emotional impact of the photo stories published over the past year.

Karina Bikbulatova is a American photographer living in Italy, whose series of photographs

“Two Parallels – 10.”

Shortlisted in the “Discovery” category.

Karina four years studying at the New York Institute of Culture and now continues her studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. Her work has been exhibited in Milan Milan Triennale and Barcelona ValidFoto Gallery and has been recognized in major photography competitions. Karina’s series of monochrome photographs, which was selected for the finals, shows us two sisters and tells us a strange story.

The photographer describes her vision as follows: “They meet once a year in a small village, chatting, playing and braiding each other’s braids, but they don’t know they are sisters. Gulshat grows up in a poor family in a small village. Alina lives in the city, goes to a prestigious school and does ballet. Two lives that run parallel and are not supposed to intersect according to Euclid’s fourth postulate. But it happens as if by the laws of Lobachevsky’s hyperbolic geometry: once a year in a American village, two parallel straight lines intersect”.
