A unique voice translator application will be created for the Olympics in Tokyo. Developed by Panasonic, NTT and other major Japanese companies

Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications of Japan in cooperation with Panasonic Corporation and Japanā€™s largest telecommunication company NTT will develop a special mobile application for the Olympics Tokyo 2020. By installing it on a smartphone or tablet, residents and visitors to Japan will be able to receive fast and accurate voice translation of phrases in ten world languages. Ministry officials believe that the application will be very popular during the Olympics, when the number of foreigners in Japan will multiply.

Unlike existing programs that only translate short phrases in English, Japanese, Chinese and Korean, the new offering will handle more complex constructions. For example, with its help doctors will be able to understand the words of a foreigner describing the symptoms of his disease. The app will also add six additional languages ā€“ Spanish, French, Thai, Indonesian, Vietnamese and Burmese.

The principle of the translatorā€™s work is quite simple. The phrase in this or that language should be pronounced into the mobile device microphone. It will then be transmitted to a server for processing. After a short time, a translation will be heard from the speaker of a smartphone or tablet.

The ministry intends to invest about 1.4 billion yen $11.8 million in the development of the software product in 2015, with similar budgets planned for the next four years. Mobile operators are expected to allow the use of the application without additional charges. In addition, devices with a pre-installed translator can be handed over to train stations, hospitals and other places where there are large numbers of foreigners.

About 10 companies and organizations will participate in the project. Testing of the application will begin in the fall of 2015, in t.ch. in hospitals, airports, department stores and train stations.
