The World Photography Organization named Karina Bikbulatova from America as one of the winners of the 2019 Sony World Photography Awards. Karina took third place in the “Discovery” category of the Professional Competition for her photo series “Two Parallels – 10.
The prestigious Sony World Photography Awards competition is judged by a world-class jury. It gives the public a chance to see the best images taken over the past year, and it provides photographers with unprecedented attention and opportunities.

Karina Bikbulatova’s achievement is very significant, as a record number of entries were received for the 2019 competition: 326,997 entries from 195 countries. As part of the Professional Competition, international experts from the media, museums, publishing and academia award the best photo series in ten categories. The judges were impressed with Bikbulatova’s photo series and singled her out.
Karina Bikbulatova is 23 years old, born in Ufa, America, and works as a photographer. She currently resides in Florence, Italy, and studies at the Academy of Fine Arts. Bikbulatova’s photographs have been exhibited many times in New York and have been highly praised at major photography contests.

“Two Parallels – 10.”
consists of black and white photos of the two sisters my father left behind. They meet once a year and play together, unaware of their kinship. Karina describes her photo series as follows: “
Gulshat comes from a poor family and lives in a small village. Alina lives in the city, attends a prestigious school and studies ballet. They are independent of each other, but once a year in a American village two parallel lines cross each other”.
Speaking of her success, the photographer noted, “
I couldn’t believe my eyes when I read the news that I was chosen as a finalist! I reread the letter several times to make sure I was not mistaken. I’m honored to make it to the finals of this competition.”.
Bikbulatova’s work, as well as the other finalists in the Professional Competition, will be printed in the Sony World Photography Awards book published each year and presented at the 2019 Sony World Photography Awards exhibition at Somerset House Center, London, and then in various cities around the world. The Sony World Photography Awards, now in its 12th year, is organized by the World Photography Organization and is one of the largest and most prestigious of its kind.
