A bathroom for every taste

Installing a bathroom in an apartment or a private house we want to create an interior that meets our idea of beauty, functionality and comfort. But among the many design styles is not easy to choose the most appropriate, especially if you have to fit the flight of fancy in a real square meter and a limited budget. Let’s try to understand the most popular styles for bathroom arrangement and how to choose finishing materials, sanitary ware and furniture.

The bathroom for every taste

Timeless classics

If the soul wants luxury and glamour, only the classic style can help to realize these desires. When it first appeared in medieval Europe, most modern finishes were not yet available, and separate bathrooms were the prerogative of the nobility. Therefore, in the interior of the “classic” bathroom everything should be natural and stately. The furniture is exclusive, handmade and only from expensive wood crystal chandelier and wall sconces are used as lamps the bath bowl must be accessible from all sides, and the sink and toilet bowl are made of natural stone or porcelain with painting.

“This style is only suitable for spacious rooms from 6 sq.m with high ceilings and windows,

– noted Natalia Morozova, art-director of the design studio Lantaria. –

It would look rather out of place in a small bathroom. Moreover, for the owner of a small apartment the cost of such a bathroom will be too high, because almost every element of the interior is custom-made.

Rustic motives

Country style social style is an embodiment of the romantic notion of carefree country life for city dwellers. Simple “retro” style furniture in light shades, baked brick, wood and natural stone as finishing – all these are the best way to create the appropriate “country” atmosphere in the bathroom. Natural textiles, wicker baskets for laundry, decorative elements with floral ornaments are also appropriate here.

A related style – Provence – is associated with the French province and differs from the “country” more romanticism. Ceramic tiles are only allowed in the shower or bathroom areas, and only in the lightest shades. The floor is finished with planks, which are painted in dark brown. The walls are plastered and afterwards painted or trimmed with wooden linings in the color of the room. The ceiling is enough to whitewash.

“Bathrooms in “rustic” styles can be quite compact and even cramped, but a window, giving access to natural light, is very desirable,

– says Yulia Gamidova, designer of the New York studio “Mirabel”. –

In an extreme case, it can be simulated by using a LED panel draped with floral curtains to create a soft, diffused light.”.

From Art Nouveau to High-Tech

One of the most common styles of bathroom interior design today is modern or “art nouveau” . It is based on references to natural forms and smooth lines, the use of floral ornaments in the decor and natural colors.

“Shades of brown, beige, green, gray, light tones of gray-blue and pearly gray – all these calm colors that occur in nature, are also used in the design of the bathroom interior in the style of art nouveau”,

– Says Yulia Gamidova Mirabel .

The big advantage of this style is that it allows the use of sanitary ware, which is available to the mass consumer. Comfortable and functional washbasins, toilets, bidets, corner baths and shower cabins with modern outlines fit in perfectly with the modern style without causing any dissonance. It also works well with modern lighting, such as recessed ceiling spotlights and zoning the bathroom with backlighting.

In recent decades the content of this style has changed significantly. Modern in its current sense can be divided into two areas: fusion and minimalism. Fusion. Fusion, as the name implies, easily borrows finishes, accessories and furniture of different styles. It also allows the use of “non-canonical” materials, unusual for Art Nouveau, such as stone, glass, polished metal surfaces, and does not limit the color options.

A direction such as minimalism, suggests the absence of excesses, the use of simple elements of decoration, straight lines, a minimum of furniture. And in this it is very difficult to distinguish it from high-tech style for the fans of active lifestyle.

Both minimalism and high-tech imply the maximum functionality of the interior. Bathrooms in high-tech style is characterized by the use of glass, polished metal and plastic. As for furniture, most often there are chrome shelves and mirrored cabinets.

Shower Cabinets

“Hanging toilets and bidets in combination with the Geberit Monolith sanitary module, which can be equipped with futuristic LED-lighting, or Geberit Duofix installation, which hides a sanitary fixture and cistern in the wall, are perfect for these styles,

– Sergey Kozhevnikov, the head of technical department of GEBERIT in America says. –

Only the essentials are visible – the toilet bowl and the flush button, built into the wall”.

And, of course, one can’t do without high-tech sanitary ware and accessories, such as shower cabins with whirlpool and stereo or mirrors with LED lighting and multimedia functions. However, these and many other attributes of high-tech, such as touchless flush plates eg, Geberit Sigma80 are now mass-produced and can be used in bathrooms in any style.

Sanitaryware

Nordic aesthetics

Perhaps one of the most democratic and flexible styles for bathrooms is the Scandinavian style. It combines the best of modernism, provincialism and minimalism and is based on the simplicity of forms, elegance and light shades, combined with wood. What’s more, they use inexpensive and practical types of wood: beech, ash, pine, oak.

The use of simple, compact furniture and light-coloured finishes enhances the visual appeal even of small rooms.

Very often well-known European brands produce whole collections, united by one common concept, which makes it very convenient to create interiors in this style. For example, the Sense collection by the Swedish brand If&ouml The Sign Art collection includes washstand cabinets of different widths, wall cabinets and wall units, as well as furniture sets that are simple, minimalistic and functional. The wall-hung and floor-standing toilet bowls from the If collections blend in beautifully with these&ouml Sign and Sign Art.

Instead of going out of fashion massive shower enclosures in all modern styles of bathroom design is appropriate to use shower enclosures. This is just a part of the room, separated by sliding glass partitions. The shape of such nooks can be anything you like: semi-circular or square, like in the Ifo Silver. In addition, the partitions themselves, using a metal profile or all-glass, can be an object of decoration, equipped with artistic ornaments, LED lighting, etc.p.

Sanitary ware

“The use of low-visibility wall drains and floor channels instead of traditional drainage holes allows you to create shower enclosures with a flat floor, without trays, thresholds and steps,

– Sergey Kozhevnikov, Head of Technical Department of GEBERIT in America, says. –

This solution looks more aesthetic and is easier to keep clean. The classic stainless steel CleanLine shower channel, for example, can be cleaned in a couple of minutes: The shower channel cover is opened and the dirt trap, which can be rinsed under running water, can be removed in one go.

A touch of the exotic

The bathroom, decorated in one of the ethnic styles, should contain clearly recognizable design elements, characteristic objects of everyday life and art, finishing materials. But the plumbing can be used quite modern.

Japanese style is laconic and minimalistic, so you can arrange your “little Japan” in the bathroom of almost any size. To the sanitary ware of strict forms you just need to add a few touches: the appropriate tiles on the walls with Asian motifs, bamboo accessories, a few decorative lanterns on both sides of the mirror. Windows, doors, and wall trim can mimic white paper sliding partitions.

The Middle-Eastern style is an attempt to reach the unattainable luxury of Arabian sheikhs. The main thing here is the deliberate chic. To give the bathroom an oriental flavor, it is enough to use ceramic tiles with small and colorful ornaments. Decorative elements and faucets with gilding are welcome.

African motifs. This style can be called “colonial,” because it imitates not the traditional bathrooms of African tribes, but the design of bathrooms in the homes of British colonizers in East Africa. The main thing is to fill the interior with authentic materials, African statuettes and masks. The restrictions of this style are obvious: in such a bathroom it is difficult to do without big windows, high ceilings, and precious wood finish.

For fans of steampunk

Exoticism can be not only ethnic, but also technological. Steampunk style, a style of bathroom design that imitates the bathrooms of the British colonialists in East Africa. This style is a creative rethinking of British heritage of XIX century, the so-called “Age of Steam”. The bathroom should look like there’s a mighty steam engine running right behind the wall.

“The atmosphere of steampunk creates polished metal surfaces and pipes with deliberate rivets and bolts, decorative elements in the form of valves, valves and gauges,

– says Victor Ivanchuk, a specialist from the capital architectural bureau Atlant-Bud. –

Washbasins, toilets and basins can be made of copper or brass, as well as mixer taps. All plumbing must also be made of solid polished pipes and laid out for showers, becoming an important element of the decor. Sources of light should be styled as gas lamps or the first Edison lamps. The walls are decorated with deliberately rustic features, such as painted or untreated clay bricks or their imitation.

Bathrooms in this style are rare, because all plumbing and most accessories can only be made to order. That means that the expense turns out quite a lot. The only consolation is that a window in such a “steampunk” bathroom would be completely unnecessary and there are no special requirements for the area of the room.

So, the bathroom from a utilitarian room for hygiene procedures can become a means of self-expression and even a work of art. And you don’t have to spend a lot of money for that. Correctly placed accents, selected color schemes and accessories help to create a stylish and harmonious interior with quite modern and functional sanitary ware and furniture.
